Understanding your care
Therapeutic ultrasound is a physiotherapy modality that uses sound waves delivered through a handheld treatment head and gel. Depending on the clinical approach, it may be applied with the aim of providing gentle warming to selected soft tissues or as part of a broader treatment strategy.
At ProMED Wellness Centre, therapeutic ultrasound is considered within the context of your assessment, symptoms, goals and preferences. It is not a stand-alone solution and may be combined with education, movement strategies, therapeutic exercise and hands-on care when appropriate.
Your physiotherapist can explain whether this modality is suitable for your presentation, what you may feel during treatment and how it fits into your overall care plan.

WHEN TO CONSIDER CARE
Your physiotherapist considers your symptoms, medical history, movement and functional goals before recommending any modality.
When used, ultrasound is directed to a specific area identified during assessment rather than applied as a general treatment.
It may be incorporated alongside exercises and movement-based strategies intended to help you return to daily activities.
Your response to treatment is monitored, and your plan can be adjusted if a modality is not helpful or suitable.
You can ask questions about the proposed treatment, expected sensations and available options before proceeding.
Therapeutic ultrasound may complement other physiotherapy approaches; it does not replace a thorough assessment or an active rehabilitation plan.

Ask our team ↗Therapeutic ultrasound is a modality sometimes used in physiotherapy. A handheld device sends sound waves through gel placed on the skin over a selected area. Your physiotherapist may use it as one part of a broader treatment plan.
Many people feel little or no sensation during treatment. Some may notice gentle warmth, depending on the treatment settings and area being treated. Tell your physiotherapist if you feel discomfort, excessive heat or any unexpected sensation.
Response can vary between individuals and conditions. Therapeutic ultrasound is not suitable for every presentation, and it is not a guaranteed solution. Your physiotherapist will discuss whether it may be reasonable to include in your care plan and will monitor your response.
No. Diagnostic ultrasound is used to create images for medical assessment. Therapeutic ultrasound is a physiotherapy modality used as part of treatment and is not intended to diagnose injuries or provide diagnostic imaging.
It is generally considered an adjunct to care rather than a complete rehabilitation program. Depending on your needs, your physiotherapist may also recommend exercise, activity modification, education, hands-on techniques or other strategies.
Yes. There are situations in which ultrasound may not be recommended, depending on the treatment area, your health history and other factors. Share relevant medical information, including pregnancy, changes in sensation, implanted devices, recent procedures and any concerns, so your physiotherapist can assess suitability.
An assessment helps determine what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether therapeutic ultrasound is appropriate. It also allows your physiotherapist to develop a plan based on your goals and functional needs.
Your physiotherapist will provide guidance based on your presentation and treatment plan. This may include exercises, movement recommendations, activity adjustments or advice about monitoring your symptoms. Contact the clinic or seek appropriate medical care if you have a concerning reaction or new symptoms.
