WHEN TO CONSIDER CARE

Osteopathic care built around the way you move.
Your care begins by looking beyond one symptom or body part. Assessment and treatment are adapted to your movement, comfort and individual needs.

Individual assessment

Your practitioner considers your current concerns, relevant health history, movement and the activities that matter to you.

A broader view of movement

Assessment can consider how different areas of the body move together rather than focusing only on the location of discomfort.

Gentle hands-on techniques

Treatment uses hands-on techniques selected according to your assessment, needs and comfort.

Support for mobility

Care may focus on areas of stiffness or restricted movement that are affecting everyday physical function.

Care tailored to you

There is no standard routine for every patient. Your treatment is adapted to what is found during your assessment.

Care that can evolve

Your response can be reviewed over time so treatment can change as your movement, comfort and goals change.

Ask our team
1. What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands-on approach that considers how the body's structure, movement and physical function relate to one another.

In Ontario, people providing this type of non-physician manual care are commonly described as Osteopathic Manual Practitioners. Treatment may involve gentle manual techniques focused on muscles, joints and other areas related to movement.

At ProMED Wellness Centre, your care begins with an individual assessment so treatment can be adapted to your needs rather than following the same routine for every patient.

2. What can osteopathy help with?

People seek osteopathy in North York for a variety of musculoskeletal and movement-related concerns.

These may include:

  • Back or neck discomfort
  • Muscle tension and stiffness
  • Restricted joint movement
  • Movement limitations
  • Activity-related physical strain
  • General mobility concerns

Because similar symptoms can have different causes, your practitioner should first assess your individual situation and determine whether osteopathic manual therapy is appropriate.

3. What happens during my first osteopathy appointment?

Your first appointment begins with a discussion about your current concerns, relevant health history, daily activities and treatment goals.

Your Osteopathic Manual Practitioner may then assess relevant areas of movement, mobility and physical restriction before discussing an appropriate approach to treatment.

You should have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss your comfort and preferences before hands-on treatment begins.

4. Is osteopathy the same as chiropractic or physiotherapy?

No. Osteopathic manual therapy, chiropractic and physiotherapy are different approaches to musculoskeletal care, although some techniques or treatment goals may overlap.

Physiotherapy commonly combines assessment, rehabilitation, exercise and physical treatment. Chiropractic is a regulated profession in Ontario focused on neuromusculoskeletal assessment and care. Osteopathic manual practitioners generally use a hands-on approach that considers movement and physical relationships throughout the body.

The most appropriate service depends on your symptoms, goals and individual assessment. If you are unsure where to begin, the ProMED team can explain the services available at our North York clinic.

5. Is osteopathic treatment painful?

Osteopathic manual treatment is generally adapted to the individual and the techniques being used. Your practitioner should communicate with you about the proposed approach and your comfort throughout the appointment.

If a technique feels uncomfortable or you have concerns during treatment, tell your practitioner so the approach can be modified or stopped.

If you develop significant or unexpected symptoms after treatment, contact an appropriate healthcare professional rather than assuming that discomfort is a normal part of the process.

6. How many osteopathy sessions will I need?

There is no fixed number of osteopathy appointments that is appropriate for everyone.

The frequency and length of care can depend on your individual concerns, assessment findings, goals and response to treatment.

Your progress can be reviewed over time so recommendations are based on your changing needs rather than a predetermined number of visits.

7. Do I need a referral for osteopathy?

Whether you need a referral can depend on the reason for your visit and, importantly, the requirements of your extended health insurance plan.

If you plan to submit osteopathic manual therapy expenses to insurance, review your policy before booking to confirm whether the practitioner, service and any referral requirements are eligible for reimbursement.

You can contact ProMED Wellness Centre if you need information about the practitioner providing the service or whether direct billing may be available for your plan.

8. Is osteopathy covered by insurance in Ontario?

Some extended health benefit plans may provide coverage for osteopathic manual therapy, but coverage is determined by your individual insurance policy.

Before your appointment, check which practitioner credentials your insurer recognizes, your annual coverage limit and whether a referral or other documentation is required.

If your plan offers eligible coverage, ask the ProMED team whether direct billing is available for your insurer.
