Understanding your care
Electrotherapy is a broad term for physiotherapy modalities that use controlled electrical stimulation. Depending on your assessment, a physiotherapist may consider it to help address pain, muscle activation or other treatment goals.
It is not a stand-alone solution. When appropriate, electrotherapy is typically combined with education, therapeutic exercise, hands-on care and activity guidance tailored to your condition, needs and tolerance.
Your physiotherapist will review your symptoms, health history and treatment goals before recommending any modality. They can also explain what you may feel during treatment and whether electrotherapy is suitable for you.

WHEN TO CONSIDER CARE
Some forms of electrotherapy may be considered to help manage pain or discomfort alongside active physiotherapy care.
Electrical stimulation may sometimes be used to support muscle activation when weakness, inhibition or difficulty recruiting a muscle is affecting movement.
When appropriate, electrotherapy can be paired with therapeutic exercise rather than replacing the active parts of rehabilitation.
The type of modality, treatment area and use within your plan are selected based on your assessment, goals and response to care.
Your physiotherapist can monitor how you respond and adjust your treatment plan as symptoms, mobility and function change.
Your physiotherapist can discuss the intended role of electrotherapy, expected sensations and other treatment options so you can participate in decisions about your care.

Ask our team ↗Electrotherapy refers to treatments that use controlled electrical stimulation as part of physiotherapy care. Different types of stimulation may be used for different clinical purposes, such as symptom management or muscle activation.
Sensations vary depending on the type of treatment and the settings used. You may feel tingling, tapping or a gentle muscle contraction. Tell your physiotherapist promptly if the sensation is uncomfortable, painful or concerning.
Usually, electrotherapy is considered an adjunct to an active rehabilitation plan. Your physiotherapist may also recommend exercises, movement strategies, education or other approaches based on your assessment.
Electrotherapy may be considered as one option to help manage pain for some people. Responses differ, and it is generally used alongside a broader plan that addresses movement, function and contributing factors.
In some situations, electrical stimulation may be used to support muscle activation. Whether it is appropriate depends on the cause of the weakness, your health history and your physiotherapist's assessment.
No. Electrotherapy may not be appropriate for everyone or for every body area. Your physiotherapist will ask about your medical history, symptoms and any relevant devices or conditions before deciding whether it should be included in your care.
Some people may notice temporary skin redness or mild sensitivity where electrodes are placed. Let your physiotherapist know about any unexpected symptoms, skin irritation or discomfort during or after treatment.
A physiotherapist will assess your condition, goals, symptoms and relevant health information. They can explain whether electrotherapy may have a role in your treatment plan and discuss alternatives where appropriate.
