Understanding your care
Shockwave therapy uses controlled acoustic waves applied to a targeted area of the body. In physiotherapy, it may be used as one component of a broader care plan for some ongoing tendon and soft-tissue conditions.
Your physiotherapist will begin with an assessment and discuss your goals, symptoms and relevant medical history. If shockwave therapy is suitable, it may be combined with education, activity modification, therapeutic exercise and other physiotherapy approaches.
Response to care varies. The aim is to support your rehabilitation and help you work toward meaningful daily, work, sport or exercise activities.

WHEN TO CONSIDER CARE
Your physiotherapist reviews your symptoms, movement, health history and goals before recommending any treatment approach.
It may be considered when a tendon or soft-tissue concern has continued despite changes to activity or initial self-management strategies.
Shockwave therapy is commonly paired with therapeutic exercise, education and gradual return-to-activity guidance rather than used as a stand-alone solution.
Treatment planning can focus on activities that matter to you, such as walking, work tasks, training or daily movement.
Your physiotherapist can help guide gradual loading and movement progression according to your presentation and response.
Your response is monitored over time, and the plan can be adjusted if your symptoms, goals or needs change.

Ask our team ↗Shockwave therapy is a treatment that delivers controlled acoustic waves to a targeted area. In a physiotherapy setting, it may be considered for some persistent tendon or soft-tissue concerns as part of an individualized rehabilitation plan.
A physiotherapist may consider shockwave therapy for selected tendon and soft-tissue presentations, depending on the location, duration and nature of your symptoms. An assessment is needed to determine whether it is appropriate for your situation.
It is generally incorporated into a broader physiotherapy plan when appropriate. This may include therapeutic exercise, education, activity modification, hands-on treatment or other strategies based on your assessment.
Some people feel pressure, tapping or temporary discomfort during treatment. Sensations and tolerance vary by person and treatment area. Tell your physiotherapist how you are feeling so the approach can be discussed and adjusted as needed.
Your physiotherapist will ask about your symptoms, medical history, medications, goals and previous care, then perform an assessment. They can explain whether shockwave therapy may be a reasonable option and discuss alternatives.
Yes. Certain health conditions, medications, pregnancy considerations or the treatment area itself may affect whether this treatment is suitable. Share your full health history with your physiotherapist before beginning care.
Your physiotherapist will provide guidance based on your condition and treatment plan. This may include advice about activity, exercise and symptom monitoring. Follow the recommendations provided for your individual situation.
The number of sessions, if any, depends on your assessment findings, goals and response to care. Your physiotherapist will review the plan with you and reassess your progress over time.
