What is massage therapy?

Muscle tension, stiffness and physical discomfort can affect how you move, work, exercise and get through your day. Massage therapy provides a hands-on approach to addressing concerns involving the soft tissues and joints of the body.

At ProMED Wellness Centre, your massage therapy in North York begins with an individual assessment. Your Registered Massage Therapist considers your health history, current concerns, movement and treatment goals before developing an appropriate plan.

Your treatment is adapted to your needs and response to care, whether your goal is to address physical discomfort, support recovery, improve movement or simply manage the physical demands of everyday life.

WHEN TO CONSIDER CARE

Massage therapy that starts with understanding you.
There is no one-size-fits-all massage. Your RMT considers your symptoms, movement, health history and goals to shape treatment around what is appropriate for you.

Individual assessment

Your RMT begins by understanding your concerns, relevant health history and treatment goals before recommending care.

Personalized treatment

Pressure, techniques and areas of focus can be adapted to your needs, comfort and response during treatment.

Muscle & soft-tissue care

Hands-on treatment can focus on muscles and other soft tissues that may be contributing to tension, discomfort or restricted movement.

Support for movement

Your treatment can be planned around the physical activities, work demands and everyday movements that are important to you.

Comfort comes first

Your RMT explains the proposed treatment and adjusts care based on your feedback, preferences and consent.

Care that evolves with you

Your response can be reviewed over time so treatment can be modified as your needs and goals change.

Ask our team
1. What is massage therapy?

Massage therapy is a regulated healthcare profession in Ontario that involves the assessment of soft tissues and joints and hands-on treatment within the professional scope of a Registered Massage Therapist.

Massage therapy may be used to address physical dysfunction, pain, muscle tension and movement concerns involving soft tissues and joints.

At ProMED Wellness Centre, your massage therapy treatment is based on an individual assessment rather than a one-size-fits-all routine.

2. What can massage therapy help with?

People seek massage therapy in North York for a variety of musculoskeletal concerns, including muscle tension, stiffness, physical discomfort and movement limitations.

Common reasons for visiting an RMT may include:

  • Muscle tension and soreness
  • Back or neck discomfort
  • Physical strain related to work or daily activity
  • Activity and exercise-related soreness
  • Soft-tissue concerns affecting movement
  • Support as part of an appropriate recovery plan

Your RMT will assess your individual situation before determining whether massage therapy is appropriate for your needs.

3. What happens during my first massage therapy appointment?

Your first appointment begins with a discussion about your reason for visiting, relevant health history, current symptoms and treatment goals.

Your Registered Massage Therapist may complete an assessment of relevant movement, soft tissues or joints before discussing a proposed treatment plan with you.

Before treatment begins, you should understand what is being recommended and have an opportunity to ask questions. Treatment can then be adjusted according to your comfort, preferences and consent.

4. What is the difference between an RMT and a massage therapist in Ontario?

In Ontario, Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) and Massage Therapist (MT) are protected professional titles.

Only individuals registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) are permitted to use these titles and practise Massage Therapy in Ontario.

Registration means the practitioner is accountable to professional standards established by Ontario's regulatory college.

5. How long should a massage therapy session be?

The appropriate appointment length depends on your individual needs, the areas being addressed and the goals of your treatment.

A shorter visit may be appropriate when treatment is focused on a specific area, while a longer appointment may allow time to address several areas or more complex treatment goals.

If you are unsure which appointment length to request, contact the ProMED team and we can explain the available options.

6. How often should I see a Registered Massage Therapist?

There is no single treatment schedule that is right for everyone. The appropriate frequency of massage therapy depends on your assessment, goals, response to treatment and individual circumstances.

Some people may need a shorter period of treatment for a specific concern, while others may return at different intervals depending on their needs.

Your RMT can review how you are responding and discuss whether further care is appropriate rather than placing every patient on the same schedule.

7. Is massage therapy covered by insurance?

Many extended health benefit plans include coverage for services provided by a Registered Massage Therapist, but coverage varies by individual insurance plan.

Before your appointment, check your policy for reimbursement limits, referral requirements and any other conditions that may apply to massage therapy.

You can also contact the ProMED team to ask whether direct billing is available for your insurance plan.

8. What should I wear during a massage therapy appointment?

Your comfort and privacy are important throughout your massage therapy appointment.

Your RMT will explain what is appropriate for the planned treatment and you can discuss your preferences before the session begins. Treatment should only involve areas that have been discussed with you and for which you have provided consent.

If you have any concerns about positioning, clothing, draping or the proposed treatment, tell your RMT so the session can be adapted appropriately.
