YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Find answers to common questions about your care. For anything else, get in touch with our team.
Ask our team ↗Your first physiotherapy appointment starts with understanding what is bothering you and what you want to get back to. This includes a discussion of your symptoms, relevant health history and the ways your concern affects work, exercise or everyday activities.
Your physiotherapist will assess your condition and discuss appropriate goals and treatment options with you. It is also your opportunity to explain what matters most, whether that is sitting more comfortably, returning to an activity or managing daily movement with greater confidence.
Before agreeing to a treatment plan, ask what the proposed care involves, what alternatives are available and how progress will be reviewed. You should leave with a clearer understanding of your next steps, rather than feeling that you need to make a decision without enough information.
You can generally access physiotherapy in Ontario without a doctor’s referral. You can contact ProMED Wellness Centre directly to request an appointment instead of waiting for a referral solely to arrange your visit.
However, booking an appointment and receiving insurance reimbursement are separate matters. Your extended health benefits plan may require a referral or prescription before it will reimburse physiotherapy expenses. Check your policy before your appointment, even if you have used physiotherapy benefits in the past.
When speaking with your insurer, ask whether a referral is required, who can provide it and whether it must be dated before treatment begins. If you already have a referral, bring it along with any relevant instructions from your referring healthcare professional.
Physiotherapy coverage depends on your individual insurance plan. Before booking, check whether your benefits include physiotherapy, how much coverage remains and whether there are limits on the amount reimbursed for each appointment.
Useful questions to ask your insurer include:
Contact our team before your visit to confirm whether direct billing is available for your particular plan. Direct billing does not guarantee full coverage; your insurer determines the eligible amount, and you may still have a balance to pay.
ProMED currently lists physiotherapy sessions as typically lasting 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your needs and treatment plan. Please confirm the length of your specific appointment when booking, especially if you are arranging an initial assessment.
An assessment and a follow-up visit may have different purposes, so do not assume that every appointment will use the same amount of time. Ask which appointment type you are booking, what it includes and whether there is any paperwork to complete beforehand.
If you need to coordinate work, transportation or help from a family member, let our team know when requesting your visit. Confirming these details in advance makes it easier to plan your day and arrive prepared.
Your treatment plan should be based on your assessment and reviewed as your care progresses. An exact number of appointments cannot be determined from the name of a condition alone. Your physiotherapist needs to understand your situation and discuss the goals you are working towards.
Ask your physiotherapist to explain the recommended visit frequency, when your progress will be reassessed and what would lead to a change in the plan. A useful discussion focuses on practical goals, such as a particular movement or activity, rather than simply completing a set number of appointments.
It is also helpful to discuss your schedule, budget and any difficulties following the plan. If your progress is different from what was expected, ask about the next steps, including whether the approach should be adjusted or another healthcare professional should be involved.
Choose comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily, and ask our team whether a particular type of clothing would be useful for the area being assessed. For example, you can ask whether to bring shorts for a knee assessment or a loose-fitting top for a shoulder concern.
To help prepare for your visit, consider bringing:
If you need help with forms, communication or access to the clinic, mention this when booking so our team can discuss arrangements with you.
How an assessment or treatment feels will depend on your condition and the approach being discussed. Tell your physiotherapist if a movement or technique feels painful, uncomfortable or worrying. Do not feel that you need to stay silent or continue simply because an appointment has already started.
Before treatment, your physiotherapist should explain the proposed approach, its expected benefits, relevant risks and available alternatives. Ask what sensations to expect and what to do if your symptoms change during or after your appointment.
You can ask questions, request a pause or decline a treatment you are not comfortable with. Consent is an ongoing conversation, and you can withdraw it. Open communication helps you take an active role in decisions about your care.
